English: James Gillespie Blaine ( January 31, 1830 – September 20, 1893) was a U.S. Representative, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, U.S. Senator from Maine and a two-time United States Secretary of State. He also ran for President of the United States, obtaining the 1884 Republican nomination, but failed to be elected, losing to Grover Cleveland. As such, he was the only Mainer to ever receive a major-party Presidential nomination.
