Hurricane Gustave causes some damage

08/09/2008

Hurricane Gustave has caused widespread damage in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica and claimed more than 80 lives. The tropical storm caused some minor damages to the SOS facilities in Jamaica, but all children and staff remain safe.

At the SOS Children’s Village in Stony Hill, most family houses have experienced some leakage in either roofs/ceilings and/or windows. In some cases, shingles were blown off the roofs. Other administrative buildings and the boys Youth Home (in Kingston) were completely flooded. At the SOS Primary and Secondary School, part of the roof covering was completely blown off, leaving the roof exposed.

At the SOS Children’s Village Barett Town, the hurricane disrupted the electricity and water supplies so a generator for electrical supply was temporarily used.

Repairs are now under way.
