A Flamenco-inspired art exhibition will be hosted at New Hall College by artist and 3rd year PhD student, Alicia Murcia, from the 11th of May to 7th of June 2008. An open reception takes place on the 11th of May from 12.30 until 2.30. All the profits will be donated to SOS Children. This will be a very special opportunity for the public to view and buy paintings and to meet with the Spanish artist.

The exhibition is also an opportunity to find out more about the Cambridge University Society for SOS Children’s Villages (CUSOS), with which Alicia is closely involved. The student society aims to arrange fundraising and awareness raising activities to support the work that SOS Children does across the world. The society is currently re-launching its activities at the university, and hopes to use the exhibition as an opportunity to provide more information about SOS Children, and encourage new interest and support. Marie Dramé, who grew up in an SOS Children’s Village in Senegal and now studies in London, will also be attending the event to share her knowledge of SOS Children.

Alicia Murcia is a full time PhD student from the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge. Starting a new life away from her native Spain, Alicia developed a deeper affinity with her cultural heritage and traditions and has translated her passion for Flamenco dancing into vibrant paintings.

From the start, Alicia Murcia hoped to channel her artistic passions and energy into making a difference for children in need and these altruistic aspirations led her to the Cambridge office of SOS Children’s Villages, to see how she could become involved. Following a visit, Alicia committed herself to the work of SOS Children, which cares for orphaned and abandoned children in 123 countries through its family homes, community outreach and family strengthening programmes.

Alicia Murcia graduated as a Veterinary Surgeon in Spain in 2002 and soon after started a PhD in the UK. Alicia has been drawing and painting for many years and is a self-taught artist. To date, Alicia Murcia has raised over £1500 for SOS Children’s Villages, every penny of which has contributed to a school in Nairobi, Kenya. In March 2007, Alicia Murcia won the 1st and 2nd awards in Selwyn College’s Art competition at the University of Cambridge.

This exhibition of paintings is a manifestation of Alicia’s strong Flamenco influences, which is reflected in the prints and original card designs, also on sale. The entrance to New Hall College is Huntingdon Road, Cambridge. Porter’s Lodge at New Hall will indicate its exact location to visitors. The exhibition is open to the public daily from 10am to 6pm. The open reception is on the 11th of May, from 12:30 to 2.30 pm.
