Ethiopia flooding: SOS children safe

Following the severe flooding in Ethiopia’s eastern region of Ogaden, a reported 67 people have been killed and many thousands displaced. The Shabelle River, which flows through the city of Gode has burst its banks, damaging homes and causing considerable destruction. The recent torrential rains have further worsened conditions for communities that suffered from extensive flooding earlier in the year.
The SOS Children's Village in Gode, although located close to the river, is built on high ground and has fortunately not been affected by the latest natural challenge.
Drought and famine have been commonplace in the Ogaden and Gode areas in recent years, although the recent bad weather is equally damaging for the local community, whose livelihoods are dependent upon agriculture and pastoral activities.
The Charity opened its Children's Village in Gode opened in 2004 and has 12 family houses, which can care for up to 120 children. The charity village also includes a nursery, a primary and secondary school and a small maternity and paediatric hospital, all of which support the surrounding community.
