Description
Deutsch: Jungfernstieg in Hamburg.
English: Old view of Hamburg, between 1900 and 1914.
Beginning in the lower right, Hamburg's broadway Jungfernstieg leads directly to one of Hamburg's main churches, St. Petri, on the left. The right tower is most likely the one of the city hall, even though the clocks are missing. In the bottom left edge of the image you can see the Binnenalster, the smaller one of the two lakes formed by the river Alster in the heart of Hamburg. In the centre the famous Alster Pavillon, a café established in 1799 and still open. This is the fourth building, which existed between 1900 and 1914.
The view along the streets and the skyline hasn't changed much since this picture has been printed, even though quite some of the buildings have been replaced in the first half of the 20th century. The Alster Pavillon is still at the same place, but in a new building of 1954, after the fifth building was destroyed during World War 2. The promenade is under construction again in 2004/2005.
